The cultural landscape at Avaldsnes holds great national significance. For the sake of the medieval church and the historical surroundings, most of Nordvegen History Center is situated underground. From Karmsundet, the visible façade is made of glass and concrete. From the church plateau, only the round entrance section is visible, symbolizing Mimir's well, the source of knowledge in Norse mythology.
Fairhair the Viking King
In the exhibition, you will meet Harald Fairhair, who will take you on a journey through the history of the rulers who governed the Norwegian coast from Avaldsnes, both before and after his time. Some of these leaders are brought to life through royal sagas, heroic sagas, and old poems, while others are uncovered through archaeological discoveries.
A Magical World
At the history center, you'll step into a world of magic that people once believed to be real. You'll meet seidmen, shield maidens, and Norse gods, bringing ancient myths and legends to life.
Dress up as a Viking or a knight, play a game of Hnefatafl or test your skills with the Viking Hunt puzzle. Here is lots of fun for young and old alike. Just next to the center, you can enjoy yourself at Leikvoll - a perfect spot for taking a break with a great view over Nordvegen.
