St. Olav's Church

St. Olav's Church at Avaldsnes was built by Håkon Håkonsson around 1250, during the height of the Norwegian realm. It was at that time the king's personal church and part of a larger royal estate. In 2017, the ruins of the main building of the royal estate were excavated. The building ended in a large gate tower, and from the gate tower, there was a covered walkway leading to the chancel.
