St. Olav's Church

St. Olav's Church at Avaldsnes was erected by Håkon Håkonsson around 1250 when the Norwegian realm was at its greatest. It was then the king's personal church and part of a larger royal estate complex. In 2017, the ruins of the main building of the royal estate complex were excavated. The building ended in a large gate tower, and from the gate tower, there was a covered walkway leading to the chancel.
