Experience the Royal Hall Ruins
In 2017, archaeologists uncovered the walls of a magnificent Royal Hall at Avaldsnes. For hundreds of years, the ruins had lain here as a well-preserved secret, well-hidden 2 meters underground. The Royal Hall is dated to around the year 1300 and was directly connected to St. Olav's Church.
Get a unique sneak peek into the work building, which hides the main part of the ruin. Here, the painstaking work of conserving the old walls is ongoing. Our guides have a lot of exciting knowledge to share with you. Not just about the appearance and function of the king's hall back in the Middle Ages, but also about today's work and plans with the ruin.

Experience St. Olav's Church
St. Olav's Church at Avaldsnes was erected by Håkon Håkonsson around 1250, at a time when the Norwegian realm was at its very apex. The church was built as a Catholic church and consecrated to the Viking King Olav the Holy.
Today, the church is Protestant Lutheran and in active use by the local congregation. St. Olav's Church is usually only accessible to pre-booked groups, but during the summer, the church is both open and staffed. Our friendly hosts will happily tell you more about the church and its exciting history.
During the period of June 23rd to August 12th 2025, the church is open every Monday and Wednesday
